What it is about: Lovely Singh (Salman) is an ace bodyguard who is very loyal and takes his duty very seriously. He is an acclaimed fighter and is also an excellent marksman. His loyalty, reputation and commitment get noticed by a top businessman Sartaj Rana (Raj Babbar), who hires Lovely Singh to protect his daughter Divya ( Kareena Kapoor).
Divya is a college student and she feels suffocated by the constant presence and paranoid nature of Lovely Singh. She complains about missing a regular college life due to Lovely Singh’s presence but the complaints fall on deaf ears. In a bid to get her bodyguard to ‘ease up’ a bit, she decides to play a drama. Divya conspires with her friend Maya (Hazel) and starts taunting Lovely Singh with anonymous phone calls. She pretends to be an anonymous ‘fan’ who is deeply in love and after a while, Lovely Singh starts reciprocating the feelings. What starts out as a fake love affair slowly becomes real. A beautiful love story begins to unfold.
Just when all seems nice and the love story is about to blossom, a series of twists and unexpected revelations force Lovely Singh and Divya to question everything they trust and believe. Whether the pair resolve the difficult circumstances and end up together forms the rest of the story.
What is good : This movie is Salman Khan’s show all the way. He takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions and draws you into the mind of a tough bodyguard. His rippling physique and vulnerable face are just right for essaying Lovely Singh’s character. This is one of Salman Khan’s finest performances ever and his fans are in for one massive treat. His action sequences have come out very well and his trademark ‘punch’ dialogues are there in abundance. The character of Lovely Singh has been etched very well.
Kareena Kapoor looks lovely and she turns in a terrific performance as Divya. There are complex shades to this character and Kareena portrays the conflicting emotions with ease. She shows what can happen when a well written character is given to a talented actress. There is some lovely chemistry between Salman and Kareena and its a delight to watch the pair on screen.
The interval twist and the climax twist are nice unexpected surprises. There are some good humorous moments in the film and Rajat Rawail’s comic timing as Tsunami Singh is impeccable. The songs are choreographed well and the songs “I Love You” and “Teri Mari” deserve special mention.
Raj Babbar and Mahesh Manjrekar give nice balanced performances. Aditya Pancholi makes a surprise cameo and his act was well received by the audience. Hazel was ok as Kareena’s friend.
What is bad : The fist half might seem a bit over the top with standard Salman Khan fights and stunts. A few sequences aimed at front benchers may make you question the laws of physics!
The film is already a super hit down south, so if the viewer knows the ‘twists’ in the story beforehand, a lot of the movie’s appeal is lost. This might also work against ‘repeat audience’ – people who come back to watch the film more than once .
Technical Departments: Director Siddique needs to be commended for a superb job. A tight and sensible screenplay coupled with a strong and fresh story make ‘Bodyguard’ a joy to watch. The director’s talent shines through in the second half more than in the first half.
Vijayan’s action sequences deserve special mention. They look very stylish and lend a polished feel to the movie. Himesh Reshammiya and Pritam have come up with a fantastic background score and some pretty good music. Cinematography and editing are pretty decent.
Analysis : Bodyguard will undoubtedly rock the Box Office this Eid. Salman Khan has scored a hat-trick for the festival season (his previous eid releases were Wanted and Dabangg). The movie has something for everyone but it will draw family crowds in a big number with its soft and soulful love story. While ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Wanted’ were full fledged commercial entertainers, Bodyguard is a sensible, classy love story that is a throwback to the days of ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. Watch Bodyguard with your family and give them something to cherish for a long time.
